The Majesty of the Mountains
The Vastness of the Sea
The colours of a sunset Sky
Sunlight on a flower or tree
I've always loved being outside in nature, I'm captivated by all of her moods. I want to capture the moment that caught my eye, or took my breath away.
But how to confine everything around me onto a flat, two dimensional piece of paper? there is the challenge. I know that I need to start by looking carefully, often with a sketch, then thin paint trying to find the main shapes and tones. As I get more involved with the paintings, and the paint gets thicker, there comes a point when I relax and take a chance, allowing the paint to do what it wants, and hope that the magic will happen
I am always inspired by the landscape around me. Ideally I like to paint plein air, or sketch, but I also work from photos.
It's also useful look at the work of other artist, either in galleries or in books or online. it always amazes me that when a group of artists are looking at exactly the same subject, the images they produce are so varied.
I love the thick, buttery texture of oil paints, but I have to remember to start with thin dark paint, building up to a crescendo of colour only when I have established the main elements and shapes of the painting.
Working with watercolour is very different. it's great for sketching out ideas, but comes into it's own when used for a gorgeous wash. Results can be unpredictable, which is part of their charm, but when the result is what you were trying to achieve there's are real joy to them.
I have a lovely studio at the top of my house which overlooks the golf courses. it is usually very messy but I try to have a good tidy now and then.
